About
My name is Azzurra and I am a photography student based in Bologna, city where my visual art study path began.
Learning audiovisual languages at the Academy of Fine Arts led me to deepen techniques and historical cultural aspects in the field of cinema and video-art, and also, helped me to train my photographic look.
At the beginning the main topic of my artistic research was the intrinsic connection between human being and environment, body and space. This subject has been present in my first works entitled “Continuity” and “Urban-Indifferences” where the human being is connected with the environment through similarities and differences in shapes.
This subject is still present but, in the last years, my works focus more on the concept of disease and distortion, as a condition where we cannot have control over our body or mind, as something that can change and even destroy us slowly. It transforms with the passing of time, changing perception of ourselves and what surrounds us.
Each project is a different way to analyse and disclose this condition, in order to experience it in a different manner. My research focuses on the consequences of disease, on what it can leave behind after its passage, creating new traces that grab from personal memory and the present time. Each work is composed by a series of images in order to create a visual path, a narration of a personal space that is at the same time recognizable to the observer.
Photography, for me, is the closest language that can translate my inner thoughts to the outside world. It is a way to stop and visualize something that is continuously flowing and decaying. This medium has the power to freeze the moment. It is able to put the action on hold, to prevent it from change and to create a new memory, that now is detached from the present time. What I want for the viewer, is to slow down time for observation, and in order to reach it I play with the ambiguity of the image and people’s perception. In this way it shows something that at first sight seems really connected to reality, like a documentation, but you have to get closer to actually observe and realize what it really is.
